The Los Angeles Dodgers said Monday they have hired former Yokohama BayStars manager Daisuke Yamashita as infield coach at rookie-level Camelback Ranch-Glendale in Arizona for the 2009 season.
''Yamashita will specialize in infield instruction, specifically fielding, and brings more than 15 years of coaching experience to Camelback Ranch-Glendale,'' the Dodgers said in a press release.
Yamashita won eight consecutive Central League Golden Glove awards at shortstop from 1976-83 during his 15-year playing career through 1988, all with the Taiyo Whales, the forerunners of the BayStars.
''In 1973 when I was a senior at Keio University, I visited Los Angeles as a member of the Japan-U.S. collegiate baseball championship and played at Dodger Stadium,'' the 56-year-old was quoted as saying in the release.
''Ike Ikuhara of the Dodgers helped me a lot during that visit and the whole experience was an asset to my career. Thirty-five years later, I am connected with the Dodgers again. Now it's my turn to help the young players to achieve their American dream,'' he said. |
