Hanshin Tigers outfielder Norihiro Akahoshi re-signed Friday for
a salary of 250 million yen -- a pay raise of 70 million yen from
this past season.

Akahoshi, 32, who appeared in all 144 games and batted a career
high .317, was given a strong evaluation as one of the Central League
club's top position players.

''I was given high marks as either the first or second position
player. Next season, I want to hit more doubles and triples,'' said
Akahoshi, who had 15 doubles with only one triple in 2008.

Also, Hanshin right-hander Yuya Ando will receive 120 million
yen in 2009, up 42 million yen from this year.

Ando pitched the season opener and had a career high with 13
wins (nine defeats) in 2008.

In other dealings, Softbank Hawks lefty Toshiya Sugiuchi
re-signed for a salary of 230 million yen, a pay hike of 40 million
yen.

Sugiuchi pitched Opening Day and was a member for Japan at the
Beijing Olympics. The 28-year-old also posted double digits in wins
for the first time ever with a 10-8 record and won the Pacific League
strikeout title.

''I barely got double digits in wins, so next year I want to
have the feeling that I will try to win in each game that I pitch,''
said Sugiuchi, who is a candidate to join Team Japan at the 2009
World Baseball Classic.
