Yomiuri Giants right-hander Dicky Gonzalez was named one of the Central League MVPs on Wednesday for the month of May.
Gonzalez won the monthly honor for the first time along with Hiroshima Carp right-hander Kan Otake, while Yomiuri third baseman Michihiro Ogasawara received the accolade for CL position players.
Gonzalez did not issue a walk in any of the five games he won during the month, while Otake notched four wins and had a 43-inning scoreless streak from the end of April.
It was the only second time since August 1986 that the MVP award was given to two players in the same category. Ogasawara had a league-high 26 RBIs and claimed the award for the seventh time overall, including his stint in the Pacific League, and first since September last year.
The Pacific League, meanwhile, selected Nippon Ham Fighters right-hander Yu Darvish for the fourth time after he posted four wins with a 0.90 ERA -- both league highs.
The 22-year-old Darvish is only the second PL pitcher to win the award three years in a row.
Fighters outfielder Atsunori Inaba took the prize for the third time, recording RBIs in 11 of his team's 16 wins during the span.
