TOKYO, Jan. 7 (13:22) Kyodo
Japan Series champion Yomiuri Giants are set to acquire second
baseman Edgar Gonzalez, who spent the past two seasons with the San
Diego Padres.
A senior Yomiuri official said Thursday the club will sign the
31-year-old, pending a physical.
Yomiuri has used several players at second base in recent years.
Gonzalez has a chance to be an everyday second baseman.
Gonzalez is a career .255 hitter with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs
in 193 games in 2008-2009. He played for Mexico in the 2009 World
Baseball Classic.
The Padres outrighted Gonzalez to Triple-A Portland in November.
