Soccer: Okada takes positives from Venezuela stalemate

OITA, Japan - Japan coach Takeshi Okada insists there were
positives to be taken from Tuesday's friendly against Venezuela,
despite being held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by the South Americans
in Oita.

Okada tested a number of players on the fringes of his squad and
also gave Kashima Antlers captain Mitsuo Ogasawara the opportunity to
force his way into his plans for this summer's World Cup finals in
South Africa.

Soccer: Japan frustrated by Venezuela in goalless friendly

OITA, Japan - A disciplined defensive performance from Venezuela
frustrated Japan's bid to win their first home game in World Cup year
in a 0-0 draw in Oita on Tuesday.

The friendly against the South Americans marked the start of a
four-match series of World Cup warm-ups this month, providing players
on the fringes of Takeshi Okada's squad to state their case for
inclusion in the final 23-man group in this summer's finals in South
Africa.

Sumo: Asashoryu's car driver denies yokozuna's drunken rampage

TOKYO - The head of a Japan Sumo Association panel investigating
Asashoryu's alleged drunken rampage said Tuesday the grand champion's
driver has denied a recent magazine report that the Mongolian broke a
man's nose and caused him other injuries in the car in the early
hours of Jan. 16.

''The driver did not see Asashoryu slug the man. He said it was
nothing like what was reported,'' Tomozuna said after questioning the
driver.

Sumo: Takanohana hints at punishment for Asashoryu for alleged assault

TOKYO - Takanohana, a former grand champion and newly elected
member of the 10-man Japan Sumo Association board, hinted Tuesday
some punitive action against grand champion Asashoryu may be
necessary if recent media reports about his drunken assault on a man
in Tokyo are true.

''If they are true, we have to take it seriously,'' said the
37-year-old Takanohana, also the head of his own stable. ''It is
important to probe the case. The JSA members need to know what really
happened.''

Boxing: Japanese prospect Ioka gets WBA world ranking

TOKYO - Up-and-coming Japanese boxer Kazuto Ioka now has a
chance to fight for either the WBA or WBC light flyweight title.

The 20-year-old nephew of former WBC strawweight and WBA junior
flyweight champion Hiroki Ioka is listed 14th by the World Boxing
Association in the latest rankings, boxing sources said Tuesday.
