Sumo: Scandal-tainted champion Asashoryu calls it quits

TOKYO - Mongolian grand champion Asashoryu, known for his
truculent and fiery nature, said Thursday he has decided to bring an
end to his illustrious but trouble-laden sumo career.

Asashoryu, 29, announced his retirement in the wake of a recent
scandal in which he was alleged to have seriously injured a man in a
drunken rampage.

Baseball: Fujikawa's salary stays the same at 400 million yen

ONNA, Japan - Hanshin Tigers closer Kyuji Fujikawa re-signed
with the club for an annual salary of 400 million, unchanged from
last year, at spring training camp in Okinawa prefecture on Thursday.

The right-hander had 25 saves with a 1.25 ERA in 49 game
appearances last season, down from 38 saves with a 0.67 ERA in 63
games in 2008.

Sumo: Top Mongolian officials erupt over Asashoryu resignation

ULAN BATOR - Mongolian officials lambasted Japanese sumo
officials on Thursday, saying that grand champion Asashoryu was
pressured into retirement because they feared that he would surpass
the all-time record of 32 title victories held by yokozuna legend
Taiho.

Asashoryu, who has been accused of allegedly assaulting a man in
a recent drunken rampage, has been accorded hero status in his native
Mongolia and television stations were awash with the news of his
decision to resign after winning his 25th career title at the New
Year meet.

Sumo: JSA board summons Asashoryu for questioning

TOKYO - The Japan Sumo Association board of directors summoned
grand champion Asashoryu on Thursday to question him over his alleged
drunken assault of a man.

The board, convened by newly elected members, summoned Asashoryu
along with his stablemaster Takasago after the Mongolian yokozuna was
reported to have assaulted a man in Tokyo in the early hours of Jan.
