Boxing: Kameda defeats Denkaosen to claim WBA flyweight title+

KOBE - Japanese challenger Daiki Kameda beat champion Denkaosen
Kaowichit of Thailand by unanimous decision to capture the WBA
flyweight title in a rematch on Sunday.

With the victory, Kameda joined older brother Koki, who holds
the WBC flyweight crown, as the first Japanese sibling pair to become
world champions. Kameda got revenge after losing a decision to
Denkaosen in October last year.

Sumo: JSA to discuss retirement pay for Asashoryu

TOKYO - The Japan Sumo Association said Sunday it will hold a
board meeting Wednesday to discuss how much retirement pay it will
award former yokozuna Asashoryu, who last week announced he was
quitting the sport following allegations he attacked a man outside a
Tokyo night club.

The special package is paid to sumo elders who reach retirement
age and grand champions and ozeki when they decide to step down from
the raised ring, with the amount normally based on achievements in
the ring.

Sumo: Goeido stuns Hakuho en route to victory at one-day tourney

TOKYO - Second-ranked maegashira Goeido stunned Mongolian
yokozuna Hakuho en route to winning a one-day sumo meet in Tokyo on
Sunday.

Goeido bumped out Hakuho in the semifinals of the knockout
tournament before going on to trip up Bulgarian ozeki Kotooshu in the
final to capture the winning prize of 2.5 million yen.

Half marathon: Gitau claims first Marugame title

MARUGAME - Japan-based Kenyan Daniel Gitau held off rival and
defending champion Mekubo Mogusu to win his first Marugame
international half marathon title on Sunday.

Nihon University senior Gitau, who finished a distant second
behind Mogusu at last year's meet, crossed the line in a
personal-best time of 1 hour, 1 minute, 8 seconds. Kenyan Mogusu took
second 35 seconds back.

Marathon: Kenya's Kipkorir wins Beppu-Oita race

OITA, Japan - Jonathan Kipkorir outlasted fellow Kenyan Daniel
Njenga for his first Beppu-Oita Mainichi Marathon title on Sunday.

Kipkorir crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 50
seconds, and Japan-based Njenga finished five seconds behind in
second place.

Golf: Ishikawa just outside top 10 at Northern Trust Open

PACIFIC PALISADES, California - Japanese teenager Ryo Ishikawa
easily made the cut and remained on course for his best finish on the
U.S. PGA Tour at the Northern Trust Open on Saturday.

The 18-year-old JGTO money title winner was in a tie for 12th at
6 under for the tournament through 17 holes in his third round when
play was suspended again because of darkness.

Judo: Japanese women take gold in 3 categories at Paris Grand Slam

TOKYO - World champion Misato Nakamura downed Ana Carrascosa of
Spain in the 52-kilogram final as Japanese women swept gold in all
three weight categories on the first day of the Grand Slam meet in
Paris on Saturday.

Emi Yamagishi took out countrywoman Tomoko Fukumi in the
semifinals before going on to beat local favorite Frederique Jossinet
in the 48-kg final.

Soccer: Matsui at the double as Grenoble thrash Auxerre

GRENOBLE, France - Japan midfielder Daisuke Matsui scored twice
and set up another as rock-bottom Grenoble thrashed Auxerre 5-0 to
register only their second win of the season in the French first
division on Saturday.

Danijel Ljuboja opened the scoring after eight minutes before
Nassim Akrour headed in Matsui's cross two minutes later to put the
home side firmly in control.

Olympics: Team Aomori seeks results, rather than recognition

TOKYO - Japan's Team Aomori returns to the Winter Olympics four
years after bringing curling to an ever-increasing audience in the
country.

Mari Motohashi, one of the two remaining members from the Turin
Games, even has her own DVD, entitled Days Off, which features her
first trip to the resort island of Okinawa.
