Golf: Ishikawa off to sluggish start in JGTO season opener

KUWANA, Japan - Ryo Ishikawa struggled to a 6-over-par 77 to
share 88th place after the first round of the JGTO season-opening
Token Homemate Cup on Thursday.

The 18-year-old defending money title winner had two birdies,
four bogeys and two double bogeys in chilly and windy conditions at
Token Tado Country Club in Mie Prefecture.

Swimming: Koga beats Irie in 100 backstroke at nat'ls

TOKYO - Reigning 100-meter backstroke world champion Junya Koga
held off Ryosuke Irie to win his second consecutive title in the
discipline at the national championships on Thursday.

Two-time double Olympic breaststroke champion Kosuke Kitajima
faded into fourth place in the 200-meter breaststroke final, won by
Ryo Tateishi at Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center.

Baseball: Sakamoto's grand slam lifts Giants over Tigers

TOKYO - Hayato Sakamoto hit a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh
inning and finished with three hits as the Yomiuri Giants beat the
Hanshin Tigers 5-2 Thursday to avoid a three-game sweep.

Baseball: Hawks agree to terms with slugger Petagine

FUKUOKA - The Softbank Hawks said Thursday they have agreed to
terms with two-time Central League home run champion Roberto Petagine.

The 38-year-old Venezuelan's contract with the Hawks runs
through the end of this season.

Baseball: Fukudome's 2-run single leads Cubs to victory

CHICAGO - Kosuke Fukudome went 2-for-4 with three RBIs as the
Chicago Cubs rallied to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6 on Wednesday.

After hitting a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, Fukudome
capped a four-run eighth with a two-run single that gave the Cubs the
lead for good at Wrigley Field.
