The Hanshin Tigers said Monday that shortstop Takashi Toritani has decided not to exercise his free agency right and will remain with the Central League club.
Toritani, 30, said in a statement that newly appointed manager Yutaka Wada has asked him to help the team win a championship next year.
''Wada-san asked me to fight for a championship next year. I really felt the enthusiasm from the team, so I made this decision,'' Toritani said.
Toritani batted .300 in 2011 -- his second year in a row to reach the mark in his eighth year with Hanshin. Toritani had a CL-leading .395 on-base percentage and also won his first career Golden Glove award.
