Seattle Mariners' right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma allowed three runs in seven-plus innings to collect his third win as the Mariners beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-4 on Saturday.
Iwakuma mowed down the Angels in order in the first three innings, and his teammates gave him some breathing room with seven runs over the first four innings. The 31-year-old established a good rhythm and needed just 86 pitches to work into the eighth inning against the Mariners' powerful American League Western Division rivals. He gave up six hits and a walk, while striking out four.
"I was entirely focused on keeping the ball down," said Iwakuma, who improved his record to 3-3. "Because I was able to work inside, my game came together."
The Angels eventually made some inroads against the right-hander, with Vernon Wells singling in a run in the fifth and belting a two-run homer in the eighth that knocked Iwakuma from the mound.
"This was the first time some of us had a deep look at him and he threw some off-speed pitches on some off counts and kept us off balance," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "Later, as we got better looks at him, we hit the ball better. But he pitched well, threw strikes, got a big lead and he knew what to do with it." |
