The Hiroshima Carp have reached a deal with left-handed-hitting outfielder Fred Lewis, a team official told Kyodo News on Friday.
Lewis has played 525 major league games with four different clubs, compiling a .266 career batting average with 21 triples, 27 home runs and 53 stolen bases. He has spent most of his career playing left field.
The sides agreed to a two-year deal worth 40 million yen a year with additional performance-based incentives. The club holds an option for the second season.
The 31-year-old Lewis, a second-round draft pick of the San Francisco Giants in 2002, will receive a signing bonus of 15 million yen.
"He can go to the opposite field and can probably be a steady contributor," the team official said.
Lewis played in just 18 games with the New York Mets this past season, although he batted .294 with a .379 on-base percentage for Triple-A Buffalo.
