The Hanshin Tigers have reached a rough agreement in the
acquisition of Washington Nationals first baseman Mauro Gomez, a
Tigers top team official said Thursday.

"All that's left in negotiations is working out the details
between the teams," the team official said.

The 29-year-old right-handed hitting Gomez, who hails from the
Dominican Republic, hit 29 home runs for the Toronto Blue Jays'
Triple-A Buffalo affiliate this season. He was later claimed off
waivers by the Nationals but received no playing time.

Gomez has batted .275 with two homers and 17 RBIs in 37 major
league games.

The second-place Tigers, who had 82 home runs for the fewest in
the Central League this season, have made finding a player during the
offseason to fill the cleanup spot a top priority.

The 32-year-old Matt Murton, who batted .314 with 19 homers in
his fourth year in Japan, has said he is uncertain whether he will
return to the team next year.
