Lions announce signing of minor leaguer Mejia
TOKOROZAWA, Japan, April 30 (18:38) Kyodo
The Seibu Lions on Wednesday announced the signing of former
minor league first baseman Ernesto Mejia, who played for the Atlanta
Braves' Triple-A Gwinnett this season.
The Pacific League club said it has reached an agreement on a
contract for the 28-year-old Mejia but are unsure when the
Venezuelan-born player will arrive in Japan.
"He is a slugger type who can hit the ball long," said Lions
team official Haruhiko Suzuki. "We will be expecting him to drive in
runs more than get hits for us."
Mejia has no major league experience. Last season, he hit 28
homers in the minors. This season, Mejia batted .354 with seven home
runs and 24 RBIs in 20 games.
"I really look forward to coming in contact with Japanese
baseball and culture," Mejia said in a statement released by the club.
