The Rakuten Eagles announced Thursday the acquisition of outfielder Eric Valent, who has played 205 games in the major leagues in his stints with the Philadelphia Phillies, the Cincinnati Reds and the New York Mets.
Valent joined the Pacific League under a one-year deal worth 50 million yen, including an annual salary and a signing bonus. The 29-year-old, who has played for the San Diego Padres' Triple-A affiliate this season, hit .267 with 13 homers and 34 RBIs for the Mets in 2004, the best season of his career.
