Yakult Swallows President Yoshikazu Tagiku indicated Monday his readiness to give the nod if infielder Akinori Iwamura wants to pursue a career in the major leagues in the upcoming offseason.
Tagiku said ''yes'' without elaborating when asked if he is intending to give Iwamura an opportunity to play in the major leagues, a year after turning down his request for such a switch through the so-called posting system.
Tagiku said at the time that Iwamura would have to play for Yakult for another season before leaving the Central League club.
After the Swallows' final game of the season on Monday, Iwamura said his desire to ply his trade in the majors remains strong.
''I'm very eager to go there and I think I'm standing at a turning point in my career,'' he said, adding he will speak about his decision on the matter ''when the time is ripe.''
The 27-year-old, a member of the Japan team that won the inaugural World Baseball Classic title, ended the 2006 season with a .311 batting average, fifth in the Central League, with 32 homers, 77 RBIs and 170 hits in 145 games. |
