The Hiroshima Carp has agreed on a deal with knuckleballer Jared
Fernandez, who spent much of the 2006 season with the Milwaukee
Brewers' Triple-A Nashville, the Central League team said Thursday.

The official signing of the $200,000 contract is scheduled to
take place next month, Hiroshima officials said, adding they hope the
34-year-old will help shore up the Carp's pitching staff as a
rotation starter.

In 2006, Fernandez posted a 6-4 record and a 3.27 earned run
average in 24 games for Nashville while making four mound appearances
for the Brewers with no decisions. He is 4-7 with a 5.05 ERA in 37
games in his major league career.
