Fujikawa agrees to 280 million yen deal with Tigers

The Hanshin Tigers and closer Kyuji Fujikawa agreed Wednesday to
a new deal worth an estimated annual salary of 280 million yen, up
100 million yen from 2007, plus performance incentives.
Fujikawa got the hefty pay raise after earning a Japanese
baseball single-season record-tying 46 saves with a 1.63 ERA last
season. He will sign the deal after the team begins spring training
on Friday in Ginoza, Okinawa Prefecture.
''Fujikawa posted great results the past three seasons,'' senior
club official Shoji Numazawa said, adding there was no talk on
Fujikawa's desire to pitch in the major leagues with his agent
Hironari Hashioka this time.
In the previous two rounds of talks this offseason, Fujikawa
asked the front office to give him a chance to pitch in the majors in
the near future under the posting system.
Hanshin owner Tsuneaki Miyazaki and president Nobuo Minami have
said they cannot accept his request.
''Now that I've agreed to terms on the new deal, I just
concentrate on baseball and try to meet fans' expectations,''
Fujikawa said in Okinawa.
