Sumo: Kaio stuns Asashoryu on final day of Kyushu sumo

FUKUOKA - Ozeki Kaio bundled out Emperor's Cup winner Asashoryu
on the final day of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament Sunday but the
victory was not enough to earn him a crack at sumo's top rank of
yokozuna.

Mongolian yokozuna Asashoryu claimed his fifth Emperor's Cup of
the year with a 13th win Saturday but was brought down to earth by
local hero Kaio, who blew the lid off Fukuoka Kokusai Center in the
day's finale.

Sumo: Kaio to face one more test for promotion to yokozuna

FUKUOKA - The Japan Sumo Association decided on Sunday against
immediate promotion of ozeki Kaio to the sport's highest rank of
yokozuna but will give him a second chance at the next tournament in
January.

The JSA judges committee agreed not to recommend holding
meetings of senior officials to discuss Kaio's promotion this time
after the 32-year-old veteran finished the Kyushu Grand Sumo
Tournament with a 12-3 record and missed out on winning back-to-back
titles.

Golf: Fudo wins Tour Championship, JLPGA money title

MIYAZAKI, Japan - Yuri Fudo came from behind to edge teen star
Ai Miyazato by one shot and win the Japan LPGA Tour Championship on
Sunday, claiming her seventh title of the year that gave her a fifth
straight money title on the tour.

Fudo, who began the day two shots off overnight leader Miyazato,
shot a final-round 71 and wrapped up the tournament at Miyazaki
Country Club with a 72-hole total of 2-under-par 286 for her 32nd
career victory on the JLPGA tour.

Table tennis: 'Ai-chan' leads Japan's charge at world junior meet

KOBE - Ai Fukuhara, who finished in the last 16 at the Athens
Olympics, helped Japan advance past the preliminary round of the
women's team competition Sunday on the opening day of the table
tennis world junior championships.

After a 3-0 victory over Hungary, Japan beat France 3-1 thanks
to a pair of straight-sets wins by 16-year-old Fukuhara, who downed
Laurie Phai Pang 11-3, 12-10, 11-9 and Carole Grundisch 11-8, 11-5,
11-6 at Kobe World Memorial Hall.

Baseball: Sekikawa, 3 other Chunichi players to join Rakuten

NAGOYA - Four Chunichi Dragons players, including veteran
outfielder Koichi Sekikawa, will join the Tohoku Rakuten Golden
Eagles, baseball sources said Sunday.

Sekikawa, who made just 12 game appearances this year and went
hitless, will move to the newly formed Pacific League team based in
Sendai on a free transfer along with pitchers Makoto Kito and
Shinichiro Koyama and infielder Tadaharu Sakai.

Baseball: JFE West Japan wins 1st national corporate title

OSAKA - JFE West Japan edged Osaka Gas 1-0 in 15 innings Sunday
for its first victory at the corporate baseball national championship.

Masato Fukutake homered for the Hiroshima Prefecture-based team
to break a scoreless deadlock while Takayuki Yamashita, Josuke
Kanzaki and Hiroto Tanaka combined on a shutout at Osaka Dome,
sending Osaka Gas to its second straight runner-up finish.

Soccer: Ishizaki steps down as manager of struggling Shimizu

SHIZUOKA, Japan - Nobuhiro Ishizaki said Sunday he has decided
to resign as manager of J-League first-division side Shimizu S-Pulse
after failing to turn around the Shizuoka club's fortunes.

Shimizu finished a club-worst 14th in the overall 16-team
standings after going down 3-1 at home to Vissel Kobe on Sunday, the
final day of the second stage.

Horse racing: Zenno Rob Roy wins Japan Cup

TOKYO - Top favorite Zenno Rob Roy pulled ahead down the
homestretch under French jockey Olivier Peslier's guidance to post a
comfortable three-length victory at the Japan Cup on Sunday.

The 4-year-old colt settled in mid-pack and waited till after
the far turn at Tokyo Racecourse to clear traffic and move to the
front, opening up a commanding lead on his way to his second major
title in four weeks following the Oct. 31 autumn Tenno-sho.

Golf: Smail edges Mahan for victory at Casio World Open

KAIMON, Japan - Overnight leader David Smail of New Zealand held
off the challenge of American Hunter Mahan on Sunday to close on
12-under-par 276 and win his second title in three years at the Casio
World Open.

Smail, who teed off with a two-stroke lead over Mahan, carded
four birdies and three bogeys in a round of 71 at Ibusuki Golf Club
in Kagoshima Prefecture, edging Mahan by one shot with a birdie on
the par-5 final hole for his third career title in eight seasons on
the Japanese tour.

Soccer: Okubo double keeps Cerezo in top flight

NIIGATA, Japan - Japan striker Yoshito Okubo guaranteed Cerezo
Osaka top flight soccer next season before departing for Spain by
scoring a priceless double in his side's 2-1 win away to Albirex
Niigata on the final day of the J-League second stage Sunday.

Okubo, who joins Spanish first-division club Mallorca on a
half-year loan deal next month, secured all three points for Cerezo
with a late penalty and left Kashiwa Reysol fighting for their
first-division lives.

MADISON, Wisconsin - Japan's Takafumi Nishitani claimed third
place in the men's 500 meters final at a short track speed skating
World Cup meet in the United States on Saturday.

Nishitani, who won the 500 gold at the 1998 Nagano Olympics,
posted a time of 41.955 to finish behind Canadian winner Mathieu
Turcotte and Apolo Anton Ohno of the United States.

Speed skating: Obara, Yoshii triumph at Asama meet

MATSUMOTO, Japan - Tadashi Obara set a rink record time in the
men's 1,000 meters to claim his first title on the final day of the
Asama invitational meet in Nagano Prefecture on Sunday.

Obara carved up the outdoor rink at Asama Onsen International
Skate Center, coming home in 1 minute, 11.54 seconds to beat Takaharu
Nakajima (1:11.90) and Yusuke Imai (1:12.14).
