The first place finisher from the regular season is the league pennant winner, but not the league champion.

The Climax Series for each league determines the league champion.

It is possible, through The Climax Series, that the league pennant winner does not become the league champion.

The first, second and third place finishers from the regular season are in The Climax Series to determine the league champion.

In Stage One, the second-place team faces the third-place team in a best-of-three series, at the home of the second-place team.  The winner advances to Stage Two.

In Stage Two, the winner of Stage One faces the league pennant winner, the first-place team during league play.  This stage is at the pennant winner's home.

A one-win advantage is automatically awarded to the pennant winner, so in Stage Two the league pennant winner starts this stage with a one game lead.

The first team to win four games in the six-game Stage Two is the league champion and represents its league in The Japan Series.
