The team with the better regular-season record is the home team in both stages.

The first place finisher from the regular season is the league champion.  It is possible, through The Climax Series, that the league champion might not make it to The Japan Series.

The first, second and third place finishers from the regular season are in The Climax Series, the playoffs.

In Stage 1 the second-place team faces the third-place team in a best-of-three series.  The winner advances to Stage 2.

A one-win advantage is automatically awarded to the league champion, so in Stage 2 the 1st Place team (league champion) starts this stage with a one game lead.

The first team to win four games in the six-game Stage 2 wins the league spot in the Japan Series.
